About Me (關於我)
My name is Vanessa Chow. I was born in Hong Kong and was raised in Montreal, QC and Vancouver, BC. I greatly enjoy traveling and have immersed myself in different cultures and environment which profoundly shaped my professional identity and approach. From volunteering at an orphanage in Tanzania, Africa, teaching elementary students in Hong Kong after graduating from my undergraduate studies to working with Indigenous clients in Northern BC, these experiences provided a deeper understanding of clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. In my personal life, I am also a daughter, grand-daughter, wife and a mother.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#13374) who provides bilingual counselling in both English and Cantonese. I possess a Masters of Counselling Psychology from Adler University (2015), and a Masters of Social Work in Family Therapy from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2013) and have over a decade of clinical counselling experience across a spectrum of settings, including government (Ministry of Children and Family Development), hospitals, schools, non-profit organizations and in private practice. My counseling approach is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, client-centered and grounds in attachment theory. I provide an empathetic, non-judgmental, and compassionate style, and therefore cultivating a safe space for clients to express their concerns.
My expertise includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and EMDR, which I utilize to guide my clients collaboratively through their unique journeys. Clients that I have worked with includes anxiety, depression, self-esteem, histories of childhood trauma, identity issues, difficulty regulating emotions, relationship difficulties, family conflicts, parenting difficulties, work/academic-related stress, prenatal/pregnancy/postpartum mental health, adapting to life transitions, among other concerns.
